Why Choose an Open-Ear Design with Active Noise Cancellation?
One of the most impressive technical feats of this release is how Apple engineered active noise cancellation for an open-ear design. Traditional noise-cancelling earbuds rely on tight silicone ear tips to create a physical seal in your ear canal.
While silicone tips excel at blocking out background sound, many users find them uncomfortable during extended listening sessions. If you dislike the jammed-in feeling of the AirPods Pro, these open-ear noise-cancelling buds provide a refreshing, comfortable alternative without compromising on quietness.
Real-World Testing: How Do They Perform on Long Flights?
In hands-on testing, Mashable reviewer Kimberly Gedeon awarded them a 4.6/5 score and a Mashable Choice Award. The real test came during an eight-hour flight covering 3,319 miles across the sky.
Throughout the trip, the active noise cancellation easily suppressed airport commotion and the persistent high-pitched hum of airplane engines. Furthermore, the battery efficiency proved outstanding under demanding conditions.
With active noise cancellation running continuously, the earbuds logged 5 hours and 12 minutes of playback on a single charge. This performance actually outlasted Apple's official battery ratings, giving users extra time to enjoy their music or movies unplugged.
Advanced Features Powered by the Apple H2 Chip
Under the hood, the Apple AirPods 4 leverage the power of the upgraded H2 chip. This silicon chip drives sophisticated computational audio tools designed to seamlessly adapt to your environment.
- Adaptive Audio: Blends dynamic noise suppression with ambient environmental sound so you stay aware of your surroundings when needed.
- Conversation Awareness: Detects when you begin speaking and automatically lowers your audio volume so you can talk comfortably without removing your earbuds.
- Voice Isolation: Uses advanced microphones to filter out distracting background noise during phone calls, ensuring clear voice transmission even on busy city streets.
- Personalized Spatial Audio: Employs dynamic head tracking to deliver immersive, multidimensional sound for movies, TV shows, and supported music tracks.
Refined Ergonomics, IP54 Durability, and the Smallest Wireless Charging Case
Beyond internal upgrades, the physical architecture has also been refined. Apple introduced a subtle shape overhaul to deliver a more stable, comfortable fit that comfortably suits a wider variety of ear shapes.
Both the earbuds and their accompanying case come with an IP54 dust, sweat, and water resistance rating. This protection ensures reliable operation whether you are exercising at the gym, walking in light rain, or commuting in dusty environments.
The redesigned case holds the title of the smallest charging case in the industry that includes wireless charging support. Charging options are versatile and easy to use across multiple platforms:
- Recharge via universal USB-C cabling for everyday convenience.
- Power up wirelessly using standard Qi-certified charging pads.
- Snap onto an Apple Watch magnetic charger puck for quick power-ups.
- Locate mislaid cases quickly thanks to a built-in speaker designed for Apple Find My tracking.
