Escape from Playtime Is Its Own Uniquely Twisted Multiplayer Toy Story | IGN Preview
Looking for a thrilling new co-op horror experience to play with your friends? Escape From Playtime brings a dark, extraction-style twist to the popular Poppy Playtime universe, putting players inside the terrifying toy factory as tiny plush survivors trying to stay alive.
The concept of toys secretly coming to life when humans are not looking has been a staple of popular culture for decades. While classic animated films usually present this idea in a heartwarming way, Mob Entertainment takes a vastly different approach. In their horrific lore, living toys are the horrifying result of dark experiments where human sentience was forced into factory products. These monstrous abominations eventually rebelled against their creators, turning the factory into a nightmare realm.
While this is not the studio's very first venture into multiplayer gaming, building a brand-new multiplayer title within the established Poppy Playtime world offers something fresh. By placing players directly into the fluffy bodies and twisted minds of the factory's resident creatures, the developers hope to deliver their most complete and engaging multiplayer experience yet.
We recently had the chance to play several rounds of this co-op extraction looter prior to its open playtest launching on October 1. Despite dealing with some finicky character controls and a fair share of early access bugs, the overall experience proved to be surprisingly challenging and immensely fun.
What Is Escape From Playtime?
For players who might not be completely up to speed on the broader backstory, the developer team provided a thorough rundown of the lore. Senior Communications Manager Tyler Sanchez explained how much effort has gone into crafting every single detail of the environments. The development team made sure that the surrounding levels, roaming enemies, and hidden Easter eggs strictly respect the established world that fans have grown to love over the years.
The developers left plenty of subtle breadcrumbs throughout the maps specifically for dedicated lore enthusiasts to discover and analyze. Sanchez emphasized that the community surrounding the franchise is extremely passionate about every single piece of story information. A quick look through online forums and community pages confirms this fact immediately. Fans regularly share detailed concept art, breakdown trailers, and debate the deeper meaning behind hidden clues found across the games.
Mob's animation origins really make the macabre merriness stick to you as you watch monsters slink through the darkness in pursuit of you.
When our team was split up into small squads and dropped into the industrial complex, the unique visual aesthetic immediately stood out. The environment creates a creepy yet wonderfully ridiculous atmosphere when seen in motion. Massive walls, overturned tables, and giant pieces of broken furniture loom far above your miniature character body, reinforcing how small and vulnerable you really are.
The colorful architecture is covered by harsh, jagged shadows and washed in unsettling, sickly shades of green and red light. Players control teddy bear characters known as the Smiling Critters, whose iconic wide smiles curve uncomfortably from ear to ear across their soft faces. Mob Entertainment's background in character animation shines through clearly, giving the monsters a horrifying yet playful way of moving as they stalk you through the pitch-black hallways.
Key Preview Takeaways
- Increasing Difficulty: Every additional shift you complete makes subsequent rounds significantly harder to survive.
- Defenseless Combat: You cannot perform direct attacks against monsters; you can only throw found items to distract or delay them.
- Co-Op Priority: While single-player mode is technically supported, playing with a team of friends is by far the intended way to play.
How Does Gameplay Work in Escape From Playtime?
During our play session, QA Manager Jostin Bilyeu gave us an overview of the core gameplay loop. While the explanations sounded delightfully chaotic and full of strategic layers, the underlying objective is straightforward. Your primary team goal in Escape From Playtime is to scavenge valuable loot from across the abandoned factory floor and deliver it safely back to Barry, a unique cart equipped with googly eyes.
You must accomplish all of this without getting spotted, caught, or brutally killed by the twisted biological experiments roaming the corridors. Every item you scavenge holds a specific point value. Each round, referred to in-game as a shift, requires your squad to meet a minimum point threshold before you can escape with your rewards and advance to the next level of difficulty.
Meeting these point requirements is much easier said than done. Collecting items around the map is simple enough, but your character starts with a very restrictive inventory space. With only four total inventory slots available per player, you must carefully manage what you choose to carry and what you decide to leave behind.
Adding another layer of strategy to inventory management, many of the items you discover offer unique tactical utility rather than just point value. For instance, you can find glow sticks to mark important rooms or drop a trail of light across dark hallways so your teammates can follow you. The airhorn is another fun item that creates loud noises to help lost squadmates pinpoint your location, though it carries the serious downside of alerting nearby monsters to your position as well.
Navigating the Terrifying Factory Environment
Even when our full squad of four players filled their tiny pockets to maximum capacity, a single sweep of the immediate area was never enough to reach our shift quota. This forces your team to repeatedly venture deeper into the core of the building in search of higher-value items. The further you trek into the facility, the more the building itself feels like a hostile, oppressive force trying to stop you.
The level layouts feature sprawling halls and countless doors that seem to stretch out endlessly in every direction. Verticality plays a huge role in navigation, as many rooms are just as tall as they are wide. Players are encouraged to use their innate climbing ability to scale almost any surface, scanning for hidden items from floor to ceiling.
However, the climbing mechanics currently feel somewhat sketchy and unpredictable. This is partially due to learning the unusual movement controls, but also stems from early development bugs where almost any surface can become sticky when pressing the action button. Navigating high ledges under pressure can quickly turn into a tense situation.
As you push deeper into the factory structure, dangerous environmental hazards begin to reveal themselves. In one area, we encountered a series of rooms completely filled with toxic red CatNap gas, which rapidly drains your health if you linger inside it for too long.
To clear out the deadly gas, our team had to navigate a hazardous path made of floating school desks. The tops of these wooden desks barely poked out above the swirling red cloud, requiring us to jump carefully from desk to desk across multiple rooms to flip a series of hidden exhaust switches. The slightly floaty jump controls led to several terrifying near-misses, but these dynamic environmental obstacles serve as a great way to spice up the core looting mechanics.
What Monsters Will You Face in Escape From Playtime?
In addition to environmental traps, the factory is inhabited by dangerous creatures that are determined to stop you from leaving. The game features four main monster varieties that wander the dynamic hallways, and we crossed paths with three of them during our early hands-on session.
The small, bright green Boogie Bots make up the primary security force inside the facility. These mechanical constructs roll along set patrol paths, sounding loud alarms the moment they spot a player before speeding directly toward your team in an attempt to explode and blow everyone to pieces.
Another threat comes in the form of Cat Bees, which float silently through the air like eerie ghosts. These creatures sneak up behind players and latch directly onto their backs, slowly draining their health over time. The only way to remove a Cat Bee once it grabs you is to have a nearby teammate throw a heavy object directly at it to knock it off.
Finally, we encountered Miss Delight, a fan-favorite character who roams the dimly lit corridors with an intimidating presence similar to a Big Daddy from the Bioshock series. She represents a massive threat to survival. Even though our encounter with her was brief because I immediately hid under a cardboard box at the first sound of her approaching footsteps, her menacing presence created genuine horror.
While the total number of enemy types is somewhat limited in the early build, the game does not feel like it lacks variety. Each monster requires a completely different strategy to counter. Boogie Bots force you to plan quick escape routes, while Cat Bees incentivize your team to stay tightly packed together. Since players have no direct combat weapons and can only throw inventory items to survive, maneuvering around these dynamic threats remains engaging and intense without ever feeling repetitive.
How Do Shifts and Procedural Generation Work?
Once your squad successfully collects enough valuable loot to satisfy the quota, you return to Barry the cart and escape to finish the shift. Successfully completing a shift unlocks the next shift, where the required point total increases significantly. Along with higher point quotas, the overall game difficulty scales up rapidly to test your teamwork.
The procedurally generated factory map grows substantially larger in later shifts, introducing a wider variety of dynamic environmental hazards and denser monster spawns. The longer your team spends wandering through the map looking for items, the more dangerous the environment becomes. Over time, roaming monsters become much better at tracking your movement, and deadly CatNap gas begins filling critical hallways, cutting off safe return paths.
During our play session, our squad struggled to survive through the second shift long enough to see just how extreme the difficulty could become, highlighting how tough late-game survival will be for unprepared players.
Why Co-Op Teamwork Is Essential for Survival
Teamwork and communication sit at the absolute core of the experience in this Poppy Playtime multiplayer title. This reliance on coordination is clear in special puzzle rooms scattered throughout the building. For example, we discovered a large room containing oversized piano keys spread across the floor, requiring us to play a specific musical melody by stepping on the keys in a precise sequence.
While a solo player could technically solve this puzzle on their own, attempting to do so while managing roaming enemies would be exceptionally tedious for a small amount of extra loot and a shortcut. The entire game can technically be accessed in single-player mode, but attempting to tackle the factory alone removes much of the fun and creates a grueling grind.
Communication between squadmates relies on a simple single-button ping system or local proximity voice chat. The ping system is completely contextless, meaning it simply highlights a location without specifying what is there. Because of this, using active voice chat is almost mandatory if you want to coordinate effectively with your team.
The game currently lacks an automatic public matchmaking system, meaning players must invite their own friends or manually join community-hosted lobbies. Finding a dedicated squad of four players might present a challenge for some, but playing with familiar teammates makes navigating the factory far more enjoyable.
Escape From Playtime Release Date and Final Verdict
Although it presents a steep learning curve and some unpolished control mechanics, the co-op extraction structure of Escape From Playtime shows incredible potential. The multiplayer gaming market is currently filled with high-profile titles, but small-scope cooperative games have repeatedly proven that they can capture massive player bases when built around strong community interaction.
Mob Entertainment already possesses a passionate fanbase ready to dive into the lore and mechanics. If the development team can polish the climbing controls, clean up early bugs, and maintain a steady stream of content updates, this title could easily become a hit among fans of the horror extraction genre.
You can jump into the chaotic factory action yourself when Escape From Playtime enters Early Access on October 21, following its open playtest phase starting October 1.
